I've always and especially recently been a bit annoyed by Chased by Dinosaurs only having two episodes. Inspired by WDGHK's work Chased By Dinosaurs Updated Concept, i've made a hypothetical episode.
The First Giant
This episode is set in Wessex Formation 130 million years ago (with some elements based off the overall Wealden Supergroup and Spain's La Huérguina Formation)
- Eotyrannus lengi - The episode's focus, an early tyrannosaur dinosaur.
- Iguanodon bernissartensis (would then in 2002 have been I. anglicus and be referred to as such) - The giant herbivorous dinosaur of England.
- Hypsilophodon foxii - A small ornithopod dinosaur.
- Polocanthus foxii or Hylaeosaurus armatus - A nodosaurid dinosaur.
- Pelecanimimus polyodon - An early ornithomimosaur dinosaur, uniquely adapted for feeding on small aquatic life and is even capable of flight.
- Baryonyx walkeri - A piscivorous theropod dinosaur with a long heron-like snout.
- Neovenator salerii - The top predator of the Wessex ecosystem, and a close relative of allosaurus.
- Leptocleidus superstes - A plesiosaurian.
- Lepidotes - A fish thats a common prey item for many animals.
Plot[]
The episode starts off with Nigel and the film crew at base camp. Nigel and two other crew members then disembark via a motorised flatboat. The first dinosaur he encounters is a Baryonx, observing it capture a fish. It notices Nigel's boat, before they head off. The boat heads into a floodplain, where he sights a herd of Iguanodon.
Later, Nigel finds and observes a flock of Hypsilophodon foraging in the woods, only to be interrupted by an ambush courtesy of an Eotyrannus, which successfully downs one. Nigel then follows it, where it reaches a nest, where a mate and two newly hatched babies are waiting.
Notes[]
- The Eotyrannus would reuse the show's utahraptor model.
- The show would re-use the iguanodon model, specifically its more well-known North American varient.
- I'm really torn on whether to do Hylaeosaurus armatus because of its historical connotations, or Polocanthus because its actually from the Wessex and there's already a model the Trilogy of Life made.
- The Hypsilophodon would reuse the show's othnelia model.
- I am very well aware Pelecanimimus has never been found in Britain and was likely endemic to Iberia, and Thecocoelurus and Valdoraptor wouldn't be identified as ornithomimosaurs until 2014, but i'm certain the show wouldn't pass over the opportunity to show a unique species like this.
- Pelecanimimus would actually be capable of flight in the episode, as per a theory put forward by Gregory S. Paul in a book that came out the same year as the show (2002) [1]. It uses an original model and actually has proper veined feathers.
- Neovenator would use a modified version the show's allosaurus model.
