Thylacosmilus atrox (Cruel Pouched Tooth) is a genus and species of sparassodont (tearing teeth) mammal native to Neogene South America. Often incorrectly regarded as a marsupial sabretooth cat, its actually a metathere (which includes marsupials), and may not have even shared the same niche as smilodon's clade, as recent anatomical studies show (Janis et. al. 2020).
