Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus (meaning "near lizard") is an extinct genus of sauropterygian reptile that lived in England during the Early Jurassic period.

History and Design
The Plesiosaurus in the film was one of the film's several hand puppets.
Role
A group of plesiosaurs are the first prehistoric animals shown in the movie. They live in the lagoon of Caprona and are depicted to. One plesiosaur, alongside a Mosasaurus attacks the crew of the German U-Boat only to be shot down by the film's protagonist, Bowen Tyler. The dead plesiosaur is later served as dinner for the crew not to long afterwards. Plesiosaurs are also seen dying during the volcanic eruption of Caprona.
Inaccuracies
Plesiosaurus is depicted as being an omnivore, with a brief shot of a pair eating some plants. In reality, Plesiosaurus was a pure carnivore. The film's plesiosaur is also depicted with an oversized head and having a vertical neck posture, which the real animal lacked.
