Mammuthus, more commonly known as a mammoth, was a genus of proboscideans that were closely related modern elephants. They are noted for their large size and long, spiral tusks. Several species of mammoth have been documented and studied including the Southern mammoth (Mammuthus meridionalis), Steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii), Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) and the most famous being the Woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius).
