Daspletosaurus torosus (meaning "frightful lizard") is an extinct genus of tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived in Alberta, Canada and Montana, USA during the Late Cretaceous period.
Dinosaur Planet (2003)[]
History and Design[]
Role[]
An individual juvenile named Das serves as the main protagonist of the episode Little Das' Hunt.
Inaccuracies[]
- Daspletosaurus horneri youngsters were probably covered in feathers, and they had very different proportions compared to the adults, with long, ostrich-like legs, and slender skulls.
- No tyrannosaurid ever roared in real life. They probably communicated with their mouth shut, much like what modern crocodilians and ratites do today. However, this was not known at the time of production.
- The show depicts hands facing backwards. Neither Daspletosaurus nor Tyrannosaurus rex had pronated hands, although there are some shots where the hands of both tyrannosaurids are not pronated.
- It’s now likely that young Daspletosaurus were looked after by the male rather than the female, similar to emus and rheas.
- The 2023 discovery of a juvenile Gorgosaurus with the legs of the caenagnathid dinosaur Citipes suggests that adult and juvenile Daspletosaurus occupied completely different ecological niches, with juveniles hunting small, fast dinosaurs and adults hunting large herbivorous prey dinosaurs such as ceratopsians. This is likely due to the fact that when tyrannosaurids became apex predators, mid-sized predatory theropods were completely gone.

Role
At the beginning of the 3rd episode of Planet Dinosaur “Last Killers”, a young Daspletosaurus stalks a Chasmosaurus in a forest, but loses the element of surprise. The Chasmosaurus charges at the Daspletosaurus and forces it to retreat. When other Daspletosaurus appear, the Chasmosaurus flees, and the Daspletosaurus chase after it, and as two young tyrannosaurids bite its frill, an adult kills the Chasmosaurus. Later, the Daspletosaurus hunt a herd of Centrosaurus during a monsoon, and at the end of the episode, they scavenge the corpses of the Centrosaurus that have drowned in the flooded river.
Inaccuracies
- Young Daspletosaurus had different proportions compared to the adults, with long legs similar to ostriches and slender skulls.
- Although this was not known at the time of production, it is now believed that Daspletosaurus communicated with closed-mouth vocalization instead of roars that Planet Dinosaur gave it.

Dinosauria (2021-2022)[]
History and Design[]
Role[]
Daspletosaurus is featured in the Old Buck short film in the Dinosauria series, watching the old Styracosaurus fight his rival. The Daspletosaurus is completely shocked/surprised when it sees the old Styracosaurus wound his rival in the stomach. When the Styracosaurus rival is wounded in his stomach by the old Styracosaurus in the Dinosauria short, the Daspletosaurus and its fellow pack members close in on him but the screen fades to black before the Daspletosaurus could kill him.
Inaccuracies[]
While Daspletosaurus in the Dinosauria series looks close to what an actual Daspletosaurus looked like, it roars just like the other dinosaurs do in the Dinosauria. Real Daspletosaurus may have boomed, cooed and hissed like some modern birds.
